Nestled in the heart of Cascade, Iowa, Fillmore Bar & Grill is a charming local gem that perfectly blends the warmth of a family-friendly diner with the laid-back vibe of a small-town tavern. Since opening its doors in 1870, this beloved bar & grill has become a community staple, renowned for its hearty comfort food, genuine hospitality, and inviting atmosphere.
The menu offers a delightful variety of classic American bar & grill favorites that appeal to both locals and visitors alike. One standout is their handmade onion rings, which according to regular patron Jodi McBeth, are “soooo good!” — and one bite confirms why. Crispy, golden, and lovingly prepared in-house, they provide the perfect crunchy contrast to the juicy, well-seasoned hamburgers that also come highly recommended.
Other comforting dishes, like the hot beef with mashed potatoes praised by Peter Puetz as “outstanding,” showcase the kitchen’s dedication to homestyle cooking that never disappoints. Mark Zimmerman’s mention of the $5 taco special alongside a cheeseburger meal priced around $22 (including tip) underscores Fillmore’s rare combination of generous portions, quality ingredients, and wallet-friendly prices.
The atmosphere here is refreshingly authentic — a true “country bar” vibe, as Mark described, where the service is attentive and genuinely friendly. William Schmitt highlights the team’s warmth and patience, especially when accommodating families with children, making it clear that this is a place where everyone is welcomed. For the little ones, Fillmore Bar & Grill thoughtfully provides a large box of toy tractors, keeping them happily entertained while adults unwind.
Whether you’re stopping by after a hard day’s work, gathering for a nostalgic reunion (as Peter’s 1965 high school alumni group did), or simply seeking a comforting meal in a welcoming setting, Fillmore Bar & Grill consistently delivers. Jake Wilson’s reflection that it’s a “fantastic little place” capturing the “perfect combination of family restaurant and small town tavern” beautifully sums up the experience.
In an era where many establishments sacrifice character for flair, Fillmore Bar & Grill stands out for its timeless appeal. It's a place where you can savor richly satisfying food, experience heartfelt service, and soak in an atmosphere rooted in genuine community pride. Truly, it’s a small-town treasure well worth discovering and returning to time and again.

December 11th my little ladies stopped in for some food after some snow removal at the parents place. Food is what one would want from a hole in the wall place and waitresses/server was exceptional nice and accommodating with kids.
